A remarkable union of natural blue sapphire, sacred symbolism, and hand-carved artistry, this one-of-a-kind skull necklace is an extraordinary statement piece created from approximately 90 grams of natural blue sapphire from Sri Lanka.
Each skull has been individually carved from blue sapphire—the blue variety of corundum—and arranged in graduated sizes ranging from approximately 0.5 to 1.5 inches. Strung on substantial sterling-silver wire, the completed necklace measures approximately 36 inches long, giving the piece an impressive presence whether worn or displayed as part of a sacred collection.
The Skull Garland & Kali Ma
The skull imagery gives this necklace a particularly meaningful connection to Kali Ma, one of the most powerful and complex figures within Hindu sacred iconography.
Kali is traditionally depicted with a garland of severed heads or skull imagery. Rather than simply representing death in a Western sense, this fierce iconography belongs to a much deeper symbolic tradition surrounding time, mortality, transformation, liberation, ego, impermanence, and divine power.
This necklace is not presented as a ritual object or a literal reproduction of a traditional Kali garland. Instead, its sequence of hand-carved gemstone skulls creates a striking contemporary connection to the imagery for which Kali is so immediately recognizable.
For that reason, we have also included this piece within Lifted Realm's curated Kali Ma collection, alongside our hand-carved natural-stone representations of the Divine Mother.
Natural Sri Lankan Blue Sapphire
Sapphire belongs to the mineral species corundum, prized for its exceptional hardness, durability, and extraordinary range of natural color.
The deep blue to indigo character of these carved skulls creates a dramatic contrast between an exceptionally desirable gemstone material and the ancient symbolism of the skull.
Rather than using blue sapphire only as a conventional faceted gemstone, this piece allows the material to become something far more unusual: a collection of individually carved miniature sculptures assembled into a single wearable work of art.
Natural variations in color and mineral character are part of the individuality of the piece.
Symbolism Beyond Kali
Skull imagery appears across numerous cultures and spiritual traditions, although its meaning should always be understood within the context of the particular tradition in which it appears.
Across different forms of sacred art, the skull can evoke themes of mortality, impermanence, transformation, fearlessness, contemplation, and the transient nature of physical existence.
Combined with blue sapphire, the result is a piece that feels simultaneously ancient and contemporary—equally compelling as gemstone jewelry, symbolic art, or an unusual collector piece.
One-of-a-Kind Collector Jewelry
This is not a conventional strand of sapphire beads.
The graduated skull carving, substantial gemstone weight, long 36-inch silhouette, natural Sri Lankan sapphire, and sterling-silver construction give the necklace an unmistakable sculptural presence.
It can be worn as a dramatic standalone statement piece, incorporated into a layered jewelry composition, or displayed alongside sacred art and other meaningful objects.
As with many of the exceptional pieces selected by Lifted Realm, this is the exact one-of-a-kind necklace shown in the photographs. Once it finds its home, another with precisely the same stone character, carving, proportions, and presence may never be available again.
