A Caduceus is the staff of the God Hermes who would move quickly through the heaven and the earth with his famous winged sandals. He was also the guide of the dead into the afterlife.
A very important figure in mythology, Hermes was also the god of boundaries. Because he was constantly crossing boundaries, he was seen as something of a trickster god. He was the patron god of thieves, travelers, merchants and heralds, among others.
The staff was also thought to have magical properties. If Hermes touched a person who was awake, the person would fall asleep. The herald of the gods was a powerful figure in his own right. Used now as a icon for the western medical community, it can be used as a talisman for perfect health, to release emotional heaviness very quickly, and for a long happy life.
The caduceus is associated with Magic, spiritual enlightenment, wisdom, immortality, and healing.
In Yoga, the caduceus represents the transformation of spiritual consciousness through the vehicles of the body’s pranic energy system. The wand is the spine, and the serpents are the kundalini force, or serpent power, which resides in the earth and at the base of the spine. When stimulated either through spiritual study or sometimes emotional shock, the kundalini entwines up the spine and flowers with wings at the top of the head. The wings signify the rise of the consciousness through higher planes of awareness.
In freemasonry, the caduceus represents the harmony and balance between negative and positive forces, the fixed and the volatile, the continuity of life and the decay of life.
